Government LED Replacement Program in Victoria

Government LED Replacement Program in Victoria

What is the government LED replacement program?

Previously known as Victorian Energy Efficiently Target (VEET), Victorian Energy Upgrades (VEU) is Victoria’s government LED replacement program. This program helps businesses and households in Victoria reduce energy consumption, electricity bills, and decrease greenhouse gas emissions.

This scheme intends to make energy efficiency advances more affordable, contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases, and inspire investment, employment, and innovation in industries that supply energy-efficient goods and services.

Reasons to upgrade to LED lights under the VEU program

Upgrading to LED lights under the VEU program has several advantages:

1) Reduced energy consumption: Outdated lighting products consume a lot of energy, increasing your energy bills. Replacing old light bulbs with LED lights under the VEU program can save up to 80% energy, as LEDs are highly energy-efficient and much cooler to run – they do not require heating in the same way old-fashion lighting technology does.

2) No/low maintenance cost: LEDs have a longer lifespan compared to traditional lighting. They can last up to 10 years, without requiring any maintenance or replacement.

3) Lower carbon footprint: As most businesses rely on fossil-fuel generated energy from large providers, upgrading to LEDs can reduce their carbon footprint and help save the environment.

4) Better lighting: Traditional lights have a drawback of flickering every now and then. LEDs provide better illumination at lower wattages and soother light, meaning better quality light.

How LED replacement under government program works?

The energy-saving rebate program grants discounts through the annual greenhouse gas reduction targets that the Victorian government has fixed for energy retail outlets. To fulfill these targets, energy retailers must buy a certain number of Victorian Energy Efficiency Certificates (VEECs) every year that equal the amount of greenhouse gas reduced or stopped from entering the atmosphere.

How do I upgrade my house to LED under VEU program?

Energy-efficient LED bulbs vs traditional incandescent

LEDs use around 80% percent less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs, saving you significant money. LEDs have a longer life span than traditional light bulbs.

LED bulbs run on a cool temperature, hence they don’t wear out fast. The average lifespan of LED bulbs is up to 50,000 hours. This is approximately 50 times longer than a typical incandescent, 20-25 times longer than a typical halogen, and 8-10 times longer than a CFL bulb. If you use your LED bulb 8 hours a day, it will last 17 years.

How LEDs are different?

LED lighting is very different from other lighting systems like incandescent bulbs and CFLs.

Colour options: LEDs are available in many colour options, including warm white, cool white, and so on.

Lighting direction: They emit light in a specific direction, reducing the need for reflectors and diffusers to trap light. This characteristic makes LEDs more effective for many uses, including recessed downlights and task lighting; while with other lighting systems, the light must be reflected in the desired direction and more than half of the light is trapped in the fixture release about 70-80% of their energy as heat.
